In need of a nice and relaxing getaway in SoCal? Add Idyllwild to your list — about a 2-3 hour drive from Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Idyllwild is filled with beautiful mountain views, fresh crisp mountain air, hiking adventures, and a cute small town to explore.
When is the Best Time to Visit Idyllwild?
You can experience all four seasons in Idyllwild, so it all depends on how you want to enjoy your weekend and what you plan to have on your itinerary.
SUMMER
I did a girls weekend trip this past summer, and even though temperatures were a bit high … we were able to still enjoy our time outdoors. If you visit in the summer, temperatures tend to go into the mid/high 80s. Also, you may have to deal with more crowds as it may get busier during the summertime.
EARLY FALL / LATE SPRING
This may be the best time to visit if you plan to spend plenty of time hiking and being outdoors. Temperatures are in the low 70s to low 80s in the early fall, while during late spring, temperatures are in the mid 60s to low 80s.
WINTER
It is said that Idyllwild is beautiful when it snows. Between November and March, you may experience rain or snow with temperatures in the mid 50s to low 70s.
Why Should You Visit Idyllwild?
- If you’re looking for a mini getaway close to Los Angeles or Orange County, Idyllwild is only 2-3 hours away — nestled in the San Jacinto mountains.
- It’s the perfect place to unwind — It’s quiet and peaceful. A great opportunity to get of the city and relax in nature.
- Small town vibe — Idyllwild is very chill and relaxed. Everyone is friendly and welcoming.
- Known for camping, hiking, mountain biking, and fishing. Idyllwild also has a thriving art scene that includes local artisanal work, paintings, jewelry, photography and sculptures.
Top Things to Do in Idyllwild, California
EXPLORE LAKE FULMOR
Lake Fulmor is a two-acre serene lake right off highway 243. You can enjoy a super easy trail (0.5 mile loop). It is a popular spot for fishing, bird watching and hiking. Kid-friendly and dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

There is plenty of parking across the street and you will need an adventure pass. Parking is $5 and may be used all day. There is an on-site parking station, however, it was not working for us while we were there. Instead, we were able to purchase through the RECREATION.GOV app. You are also able to purchase ahead of time through the site or app. A printed copy is recommended to place in vehicle. However, if you purchase on-site (same day) … a printed copy will not be available, so your license plate number will be used to confirm compliance.

Where to Stay in Idyllwild-Pine Cove, California
My friends and I spent the weekend at this beautiful AIRBNB cabin — Rising Glen Retreat.
The cabin was in a quiet cul-de-sac and only one mile away from the village. A beautiful view, very spacious and relaxing. This secluded cabin is definitely a home away from home that accommodates 6 guests with 3 bedrooms (5 beds) and 2 baths.
